- The Tory Inne ... one of
East Goshen's Historic properties on display
-
- For the first time in its 10-year history, the Chester County Town
Tours and Village Walk
- featured a number of East Goshen Township historic properties on 29
July 2004.
-
- The Historic Village of Goshenville, nestled in the center of
East Goshen Township,
- has two stone properties more than 200 years old.
-
- Retaining its functioning forge, the William Sharpless Blacksmith and
Wheelwright Shop
- was built in two sections (Circa1704 - 1740)
- and was restored during East Goshen's Bi-Centennial Celebration
in 1982.
- The 1800 Jesse Reese House, across the road from the Blacksmith
Shop,
- was expanded during 1806 when Jonathan Fields, a
shopkeeper and tailor,
- opened the Goshenville General Store.
-
- In 1828 a Post Office was added to the Goshenville General
Store.
The Goshenville Post Office was served by 19
Postmasters in the 76 continuous years it was open,
closing in 1904.
The General Store served the Village of Goshenville for 117
years,
finally closing its door s in 1923.
In 2002, the General Store and Post Office was again substantially
expanded,
this time resulting in The Tory Inne
Bed & Breakfast
which opened its doors in March 2004.
The third historic property on display for the Village Walk
was the
1808 Milltown-Hickman Plank House which was saved from demolition in
1989.
East Goshen Township had the building dismantled,
the pieces
numbered and then placed in storage for 10 years
while local residents raised money to rebuild it in the Village of
Goshenville.
A "Hall and Parlor" house filled with period pieces,
the
Milltown-Hickman Plank House
is listed in the Historic American Building Survey,
which is
registered in the Library of Congress.
